THE DEPARTMENT OF CARDIOLOGY

National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute is the first public private partnership based tertiary cardiac hospital of Bangladesh, as a non-profit organization dedicated solely to the care and treatment of patients with cardiovascular diseases and conditions. The department of cardiology of this hospital is a state-of-the-art unit providing quality cardiovascular care in a compassionate, patient-centered environment. Lead by a team of qualified and highly experienced full time cardiologists, paramedics and trained cardiac nurses, it provides emergency care, diagnosis, medical treatment and outpatient services for all heart disorders. This includes myocardial infarction (heart attacks), heart failure, heart valve disease, cardiomyopathies (heart muscle disease), congenital heart defects, high blood pressure and arrhythmias.

Coronary Care Unit (CCU):

Our 16-bed coronary care unit provides state-of-the-art technology and 24 hour care to those critically ill patients suffering from acute coronary syndrome (STEMI & NSTEMI), and all other cardiac emergencies.
Each bed is attached to a cardiac monitor that is connected to central monitoring system. It is equipped with syringe pumps, pulse oxymeters, central oxygen, ventilator, portable x-ray, and bedside echocardiography facilities.

Each patient is under the care of a specialty trained cardiac nurse. Two senior medical officers with CCU experience are present on duty round the clock. The CCU has a back-up support of dedicated team of intensivists, anesthesiologists and cardiologists to tackle all types of emergencies.

Non Invasive Cardiology:

The non-invasive division of the department is doing all ranges of cardiac diagnostic procedures. There are two echo labs and five state-of-the-art color Doppler machines. The Echo labs run from morning 8 am to 5 pm in the evening, six days a week. In our echo labs, various kinds of echocardiographic procedures such as resting  transthoracic, transoesophageal and dobutamine stress echocardiography,  carotid Duplex ultra sound and vascular Doppler of upper and lower limbs are performed. Two ETT machines and four holter monitors are also serving as per expanding demand.

64 Slice CT-scan:

The department of Radiology and Imaging has latest state of the art 64 slice CT scanner for coronary angiography, CT cerebral & peripheral angiography & CT guided coronary & peripheral interventions.

 Interventional Cardiology:

The STATE-OF-ART FOUR catheterisation labs are equipped with Philips and GE Xray imaging units. The Philips equipment is the most up to date  and has many features which enhance imaging including ‘stent boost’ giving excellent visualisation of coronary stents during insertion. Starting in March 1999, a total of 37965 procedures done upto July 2009. The procedures are done regularly:

  • Coronary Angiogram
  • Carotid angiogram
  • Renal angiogram
  • Peripheral angiogram
  • Angioplasty & Stenting
  • Primary angioplasty for acute STEMI
  • Drug-eluting balloon angioplasty
  • Right & Left heart catheterization
  • Coronary intravascular ultrasound studies (IVUS)
  • Rotablator atherectomy
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump insertion (IABP)
  • Temporary pacing
  • Permanent pacemaker insertion
  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillator insertion or ICD
  • Electrophysiology studies (EPS)
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
  • Non-surgical repair of  defects in the heart
    • Valves (PTMC, pulmonary & aortic valvoplasty)
    • Congenital defects ( ASD, VSD, PDA)
