Department of Research and Epidemiology

Cardiovascular diseases are one of the major health problems throughout the world and these are becoming a serious health problem in Bangladesh. Amongst the heart diseases are common.

There is a common belief that heart disease is a disease of rich people, which is not correct.

  1. Rheumatic heart diseases commonly affect poor people living in overcrowding condition.

  2. Congenital heart diseases and hypertension can affect both rich and poor people.

  3. Poor people are not immune from Ischaemic heart disease

Latest survey on cardiovascular diseases carried out in Bangladesh showed prevalence of

  1. Hypertension in adult population 15-20%

  2. Ischaemic Heart Disease is about 10% of all hospital admission.

  3. Rheumatic Heart Disease 1.2/1000 children aged 5-22 years.

  4. Congenital Heart Disease 8/1000 new born baby.

Activities of the Department of Epidemiology & Research:

  • Management of Hospital Record Keeping System

  • Research support to other departments in terms of Protocol development, data management, analysis and report writing

  • Arrangement of workshop and training programs.(5 day teaching seminar)

  • Secretariat of Hypertension committee of National Heart Foundation

  • Prevention,detection,control and management of Hypertension in collaboration with world Hypertension League.

  • Heart camp: Heart camps are organized at different places of the country and cardiologist participate in the camp, treat heart disease patients, educate and motivate people about prevention and control of CVD.

  • Workshop: Hold workshop on Cardiovascular Diseases Jointly Organized by WHO and NHFH&RI

  • Public Education: Public education on prevention of CVD through mass media, seminar symposium , 3 monthly.

  • Continue Medical Education (CME) program

  • Weekly clinical meeting and journal club.

  • Observance of World Heart Day, World Hypertension Day, World No Tobacco Day in every year.

  • Co-ordination of International and National Conferences.

  • Booklets are published and educational program are carried out through mass media like Radio, TV, Pess to create awareness among people.
